Individual Counselling Options
Individual counselling can be a valuable source of support after losing someone to suicide. Working one-on-one with a counsellor offers a safe place to express emotions, process painful questions, and rebuild a sense of meaning and stability. Finding the right counsellor—someone experienced in suicide loss and with whom you feel comfortable and understood—is an essential part of healing. Counsellors may use different approaches depending on your needs, including Cognitive Behavioural Grief Therapy and Complicated Grief Therapy; trauma-focused approaches (e.g., EMDR, DBT); and narrative and meaning-centred therapies (e.g., Narrative Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy).
(Nichols, Krysinska, Reifels, Kartal, & Andriessen, 2024). Local funeral homes will often have information about grief counselling options. Furthermore, below are online directories to help you locate registered psychologists, counsellors, and therapists in your area.
